By surface

Wooden-floor badminton courts in Sri Lanka.

Wood is what tournament halls play on: more grip than synthetic, and considerably kinder to ankles and knees than cement. It is also the single detail most Sri Lankan venues never mention online, so this list exists because we recorded the floor on every hall we verified.

02What it means

Worth knowing.

The grip is the part players notice first. A wooden floor lets you plant and change direction without the slide you get on a dusty synthetic mat, which matters most in the back corners. It is also more forgiving over a long session — two hours on cement is felt the next morning in a way two hours on wood is not.

Condition varies more than surface type does. A well-maintained synthetic court beats a wooden floor that has gone soft in patches or lifted at the seams, and a few of the older municipal halls have both good wood and tired wood depending on which court you are given. If it matters to you, ask which court you are being booked onto when you call.

Nearly every hall here runs on industrial fans rather than air conditioning, wooden floor or not. That affects the shuttle more than the floor does — it flies noticeably differently once a hall warms up in the middle of the day.

03Questions

Questions people actually ask.

Is a wooden court better than synthetic?

For grip and joint comfort, generally yes, which is why tournament halls use wood. But a well-kept synthetic mat is better than worn wood, and synthetic is the norm in newer private halls here. Cement is the hardest on your body and usually the cheapest.

Do wooden courts cost more in Sri Lanka?

Not reliably. Some of the cheapest halls in the country are municipal buildings with wooden floors, and some of the most expensive private venues are synthetic. Surface and price are set by who owns the building, not by the floor.

How do I know the floor is in good condition?

You cannot from a listing, ours included — we record the surface type, not its condition on the day. Ask when you call whether the courts have been resurfaced recently, and if a hall has several courts, ask which one you are getting.
